Melee Defense vs Fighting Defensively

This was a big issue a while back, and Sarli was asked. He came along and said that fighting defensively indeed let you make an attack. But in the same thread, Rodney came along and corrected him, and told us that fighting defensively was not supposed to include attacks.
It does let you make attacks of opportunity, attacks from gaining extra standard actions, and attacks given by special abilities like riposte, at a penalty.

Wow, that makes Melee Defense a MUCH better ability.

Without Rodney’s ruling, Melee Defense has zero purpose. Fighting Defensively whilst being Trained in Acrobatics is all anyone would ever do. ;)
